RIE TANJI: STATEMENT ON HER ARTIST WORK
Rie Tanji comes from Fukushima. Although she did not experience the great quake, the tsunami and the reactor disaster in 2011 at her home prefecture, the events nevertheless had a great influence on her artistic work. In the Zoom interview, she gives a brief insight into her artistic work.
Her hometown and nature were overtaken not only by the wave, but also by nuclear power. Many people have lost their residences. Nature, which humans need to live, is destroyed again and again by human hands. This experience has greatly changed her sculpture: “Immediately after the earthquake, I felt that the nature of Fukushima, which was affected by radiation, had disappeared.”
Since 2011, “nature,” “dwelling,” “place,” and “memory” have been concepts that are reflected in her sculptures, drawings, and installations. She uses plaster, concrete and materials from the hardware store, exhibiting in galleries but also in abandoned houses.
For the exhibition REDRAW TRAGEDY, Rie Tanji has prepared a series of wall works, much of it recent. Rie Tanji’s works can be seen at the Künstlerforum from 16.1. for the first time in Europe.
